EagleEye
Remote Eagle Monitoring

Real time in-tree monitoring of eagle activity in the nest.

Description

Obtaining and managing high level data for sensitive species is a complex, time consuming and costly task. Manual in-field observations are point-in-time based and can be inconsistent. Creating longer time-series data is very difficult due to irregular or infrequent field observations and can be cost prohibitive.

In the context of forestry and renewable energy production (wind farms ect), knowledge and understanding of eagle nest activity is critical to managing compliance and statutory reporting obligations.

EagleEye utilizes IoT technology to safely and easily remotely monitor in-nest activities for large eagles. This creates a rich time series of nest activity that is cheaper and safer and more accurate to collect than traditional management practices.

IoT technology allows for wide coverage, limited field maintenance and low-cost sensors. Access to data via cloud-based services means real time access away from the field.

  • Improved accuracy
  • Improved safety
  • Reduced cost

Solution

EagleEye is an IoT enabled remote sensor, supported by cellular video cameras, that enables direct and real-time observations of in-nest activity. Utilizing LoRaWAN®, data is collected across a wide environment that is collated and analyzed in the cloud to present a rich dataset of nest activity.<

Application

  1. Pre-configured sensors are installed above the eagle’s nest. Being fully self- contained and weatherproof, they remain active for many years. The sensor detects eagle activity and movement to provide data on nest utilization.
  2. The sensors periodically monitor the eagle nest then transmit the encrypted data via LoRaWAN® radio transmission to a pre-configured LoRaWAN® gateway within proximity.
  3. All gateways listen for and receive sensor radio transmissions, and using a 4G backhaul the LoRaWAN® gateway forwards the encrypted data to the LORIOT network server.
  4. The received encrypted data is authenticated, and the network server routes the data via output API to IoT Hub platform based on Microsoft Azure.
  5. Indicium Dynamics’ DataBus then applies appropriate logic and analytics to present the data in user friendly dashboards.
  6. This enriched dataset allows for a greater depth of understanding about bird activity in the environment to better inform management decisions and land use practices.

The return

With the sensor data providing clear, precise information, land managers have a rich picture of eagle activity across a wide landscape. This can better inform land use management decisions and also improve animal welfare through reduced human intervention.

The return on investment:

  • INCREASE IN UNDERSTANDING OF EAGLE ACTIVITY
  • INCREASE IN LAND USE PRODUCTIVITY
  • REDUCE TIME AND LABOUR COST TO MONITOR WILDLIFE
  • COST SAVING THROUGH REDUCED USE OF AIRCRAFT FOR AIR SURVEYS
  • IMPROVED SAFETY DUE TO LESS TIME IN REMOTE FIELD LOCATIONS

Through higher frequency of nest activity observations, a detailed understanding of in forest activity can be obtained that is year-round and available remotely via the internet.

Departure from expensive and risky traditional fixed wing and rotary aircraft surveys improves safety, significantly reduces ongoing compliance costs and has a far lighter impact on eagle welfare.

Combining the power of IoT with the secure, scalable LORIOT LoRaWAN® Network Server feeding data to the Indicium DataBus, Indicium Dynamics have re-defined how eagles can be monitored whilst providing a highly cost effective and safety orientated solution.
